Meet 'Godzillion', the monster of all

English Lesson Notes for Junior Secondary

Meet 'Godzillion', the monster of all

There are times we have too many things to do but totally lack the word that can best describe how numerous these things are, so we resort to using words/phrases like "uncountable", "too many", "billions", "a thousand and one thing", "numerous" etc.

Meet "Godzillion", the monster of all

Well, if that has been your case, I have a word for you. The word is Godzillion (pl. Godzillions). Godzillion is a number exceeding all other numbers. I call it the king of numbers but others call it the monster of numbers. It is the largest number.

Godzillion is hyperbolic or exaggerative. Therefore, its presence in any sentence automatically makes the sentence a hyperbole. A hyperbole is a literary device that exaggerates the actual situation being represented. For example, "I have been waiting for you for 2000 years." Can I wait for someone for 2000 years? No! I only used a high sounding word to show how long I have waited or been waiting. This is also what "godzillion" represents.

Invented by Jonathan Goldstein, "godzillion" is yet to be incorporated into most printed and online dictionaries.

Some examples
  • Tammy has a godzillion things to do today.
  • There are no adequate materials on that project topic, so, you really need to pay a godzillion naira to get it done.
  • She will never believe you even if you give her godzillion reasons.
